EDM Machining
Mountain View Machine offers spark erosion services, known as wire and sinker EDM machining, creating precise, accurate, and consistent cuts in any conductive material.Wire EDM: A Highly Precise Cutter Service
Wire EDM is one of the most consistent, precise cutter services available, with cuts that are accurate within 1/1000 inch. Laser cutting and flow water jets operate from a top-down angle, resulting in a cut that becomes gradually less precise further from the source while wire EDM, on the other hand, makes a precise cut throughout the entire thickness of the material.
Benefits of Sinker EDM
While Wire EDM uses a side approach to cut along the X and Y axes, sinker EDM cuts cavities into materials along the Z axis. Mountain View Machining employs both methods of spark erosion based on the type of cut required. Generally, wire EDM is used to completely cut through a material, while sinker EDM uses a graphite probe to create a cavity of a specific shape and size. This method is most commonly used for tooling or to create molds.
Versatility For Custom Production
In addition to being incredibly precise, wire EDM machining boasts versatility that surpasses many CNC machining services. Wire EDM is effective on any material that is electrically conductive, regardless of thickness or melting point, and is a preferred CNC machining service for many exotic metals. Wire EDM machining is also versatile in that it can cut at angles up to 45 degrees.
EDM Machining
An EDM machine includes the use of oil or water, often by submersion. In both scenarios, the temperature of the liquid acts to maintain a constant temperature of the material, thus eliminating expansion and preserving an accurate cutter service. Fluid also eliminates residual particles that are 2 microns or even smaller, facilitating a cleaner cut.
A Staple Among CNC Machining Services
Virtually all machinists count EDM machining as one of the essential CNC machining services. EDM is crucial in custom production because it offers consistent, precise results across a wide range of materials with a thickness of 1 inch up to 30 inches. Mountain View Machine and Welding relies heavily on wire EDM in our custom production projects.
