The machining specialists at Mountain View Machine and Welding offer custom milling services as part of our comprehensive precision machine shop.Precision Machining Shop
From custom manufacturing to design prototyping, our expert machinists want to help with all your milling needs. We have years of experience with mills and know how to create custom projects using them. In order to fully serve our customers, our machine shop utilizes both manual and CNC milling machines. If you are still determining which option would work best for you and your project, read below to learn more.
Manual Milling Machines
Manual mills are, as their name suggests, fully manual machines that require a qualified machinist to operate them. From the speed to feed rate and cut depths, the machinist manually decides every aspect of how the mill does the work. Due to this, the precision of the machining heavily depends on the skill and experience of the technician, making it all the more important for a qualified machinist to do the job.
Manual milling machines are best suited for less complex jobs, small batch production, and one-off prototypes. They allow for more flexibility with on-the-fly modifications as the machinist can adjust accordingly. Manual mills also offer a lower initial cost, another aspect that works well for one-time creations.
CNC Milling Machines
CNC Mills are controlled by a computer that is pre-programmed to do the work, or in other words, they are fully automated milling machines. The machinist still controls speed, feed rate, depth of cuts, and tool paths, but these decisions are made and put into the program before any cutting begins.
CNC Mills follow exact programmed instructions, allowing for high precision, repeatability, and tight tolerances that may not be achievable with manual milling machines. This makes CNC milling machines ideal for complex designs and high-volume production rates. The initial setup and programming do take extra time, but once done, the machine can complete the work, and repeat the work, efficiently. CNC mills often have a higher upfront cost but are cost-effective for large production runs or complex tasks that may take longer (which means costing more) if done manually.
